[ On an ordinary day, Medusa walked with purpose. She knew exactly where she was going, exactly what she was doing. On ordinary days she walked only briefly and for the most part she studied. Mostly she stayed in the library or the common room of floor 7, a large textbook in hand. This was not an ordinary day.

There was a somewhat complicated facet to this particular flood. She had gathered bits and pieces just listening to the network, but she wanted specifics. How does it work, what’s the mechanism, and how is the Admiral involved?

Today, she is conducting an observational study. She walks from the bottom of the ship to the top, seeing what there is to see and taking mental notes of everything. ]

A sign of weakness. Floods as well as breaches.

They can only weather so many, before they break. It shows promise.

[Lua has a good idea of why everyone's getting sick, but she tried it herself, just to make sure, and nothing. Either she's wrong or it hasn't gotten her, and she's glad for that last part, with all the tiny lies she has to tell. So, Medusa, here she is, picking up a snack between meals. When she sees her, she gives her a nod in acknowledgement, and her usual question's out before she can stop herself.]

You making it?

[ Medusa pauses, looking Lua over with interest. She looks just the same as always, timid but not obviously in pain. Parhaps she isn't having trouble with the flood at all. ]

I'm managing just fine, thank you. [ A totally relative statement, but true enough. She has a very high threshold for pain. ]

And yourself?

...Medusa. [Have a surprised look.]

Red. [ Medusa rolls her eyes. So slow on the uptake, this one. ]

It's as good a starting point as any, I suppose.

It's certainly better than running about begging for my release, like some of the inmates have decided to do.

Are you okay?

Is there any reason to believe I wouldn't be? [ She looks healthy enough. She is quite excellent at hiding pain. ]

Almost anything is. Besides giving up entirely.

Doing nothing can be an effective tool at times. Giving up, however, is something else entirely.

They're very different.

It's easy to mistake one for the other.

Well... we're having another flood.

So we are. [ She gives a look that says, "your point?" ]

[surrenders]

It didn't get me. So all right. [A way to forestall attacks as much as anything; she knows how Medusa can get for no reason.]

And your fiance? [ Nothing but pleasantries here, nothing at all. ]

[surrenders]

Couldn't say how he is, never heard him tell anything but the truth. [A little smile, almost deprecating.] So I guess he's all right, thank you.

And I'm sure you would know, if he ever lied to you.

[surrenders]

I know he doesn't need to. [She's forgotten why she was here, and should walk away from this, shouldn't even have said anything, but no matter what someone says about her, if they say it about him...] You don't have somebody you can trust, you miss out.

You're better off trusting nobody but yourself.

[surrenders]

Can you do everything on your own? [Again, she's not on her guard with the question.]

[nakesnakecobracobra]

Everything I can't do on my own I can find someone to do for me. [ And she doesn't mean friends, she means blackmail and threats and sheer force of will. ]
